                                                  Rhdodendron in Sikkim

Sikkim is known to harbor 34 species of Rhododendrons including the rare Rhododendron sikkimensis. Many of the species including the R.fulgens, R.maddeni ,R niveum, R.pumilum are now known to be either rare or threatened.                                           

The International Rhododendron Festival is being held in Sikkim from April 25th.2010 to May 14th 2010. The initiative is aimed at creating awareness for the conservation of Rhododendrons both among the local populace as also the visitors.

 

In Sikkim the Rhododendron areas include the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctruary, the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary and the Dzongr-Goechala trek areas.
