Treks

Geographically, Sikkim encompasses the tropical to the snow bound regions. Within are the orchids, the blue sheep, the musk deer, pheasants, the red panda, its native people, their enchanting customs, traditions, religions, their simple way of life, their mysterious mountains and their guardian-deity - the Mount Khangchen Dzo Nga.
The following programs can be followed for a pleasant trek. The day wise schedule is flexible and can be changed along the way to make it more comfortable for you.
Typically all treks follow a same kind of pattern in timing - wake up at 7 a m, breakfast at 7.30 and start trek by 8 30 and get to bed by 8 30 p m. However many hard trekkers make their own rules and have more fun than the rest.
 Goechala Trek

Standing at the Goechala (18000 ft) on a clear day one could see Mt Khangchen Dzo Nga (often misspelled as Kanchanjunga) up close and full blast. Pic on the left is at Goechala at the base of Goecha peak. Mt.Khangchen Dzo Nga under clouds at the back. The base of Mt.Pandim starts here too at the right. Once reaching here it is customary to pray, have tea/coffee and snacks, stretch out the legs tired from the morning's walk and relax before heading back down to the camp.

Program:-
Day 1          We receive you at the Bagdogra airport/New Jalpaiguri railway station and leave for Yuksom (5-6 hours journey). Lunch enroute. Drive through the tropical to temperate zone. Check into hotel at Yuksom.
Day 2          Explore walking through Yuksom. Visit Dubdi monastery, the oldest monastery of Sikkim and Norbugang, the coronation site of the first King (Chogyal) of Sikkim. In the evening try the local Chhang (fermented millet beer sipped through a bamboo straw) at the local village. Before going to bed do not forget to record the birds and the butterflies sightings of the day.
This is Yuksom:-
Day 3           Today we start the first day of the trek. The trail runs through temperate forests with the Rathong river roaring down below.  Lunch and tea will be served enroute. Terrain for the first half of the day will be gradual slopes. From Prekchu onwards it is a climb all the way up to Bakkhim in the later part of the afternoon.Look out for Rhododendron arboreum along the way. You are now inside the Kanchenjunga National Park (KNP).
Day 4            After breakfast at 7 30 we continue our trek towards Dzongri passing through Tsokha, a small village that also serves as a halting place on treks. From Tsokha look back down to Yuksom you left behind the previous day. Notice the gradual change in vegetation to conifers and alpine flora along the way. If need be and time allowing, you could also halt for the night halfway at Phedang. You are at Dzongri at 12000 ft. Get the fresh smell of Rhododendron anthopogon on the way? Most Rhododendrons flower between latter half of April and first half of May. After the experience we head back down to camp. After a leisurely lunch we move camp to Thangshing for the return journey. Thangshing campsite is at the base of Mt.Pandim. Many climbing expeditions have been launched from here.
Day 7             Walking through Rhododendron forests during the day we camp at Tsokha. Here we meet many other trekkers who are tracing our steps to Dzongri and beyond to Goechala. Many stories are traded here with first introductions among strangers over chhang. Many friendships also start here sharing the same love for the mountains. Be considerate not to be over generous in buying them drinks - they still have to climb upward to where you had been.
